Colorado State Senator Al White, Republican, plans to put forth legislation to bring the medical marijuana industry within the folds of state government. Right now, the industry is growing rapidly, with more and more new patients signing up for medical marijuana cards every day. Private caregivers are setting up dispensaries just as quickly to meet the demand. Much can be learned from the difficult experiences in California during the early days of medical marijuana. Absent clear policies, guidelines, laws, and leadership, the medical marijuana industry may grow too quickly for its own good. Adoption of industry best practices, as set forth by dispensaries which have achieved success in existing in harmony with local residents, police, and officials, would allow for a deflection of some of the seemingly inevitable backlash from groups and officials opposed to the issue of medical marijuana fundamentally.
